Oops! Queen Mathilde of Belgium wrongly congratulates Romelu Lukaku
Belgian monarch Queen Mathilde made a gaffe while congratulating squad the national team for qualifying.
The monarch, who has been in the job for just under a year, accompanied her husband, King Philippe, to congratulate Marc Wilmots’ squad after they qualified for the knockout stages with a 1-0 win over Russia.
Teenage substitute Divock Origi scored the crucial goal, firing home in the dying moments from Eden Hazard’s superb cut back.
Queen Mathilde thought she was congratulating the 19-year-old when she met the squad – but in fact she was actually speaking to Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku.
The Belgium No 9 was gracious when speaking to Her Majesty, pointing out that it was not he who had scored the goal.
Belgium will play an opponent from Group G in the next round.
