Policy think tank IMANI Ghana has described the arrest of 12 persons by the Economic Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in connection with the Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency (GYEEDA) report as weak.
“So arrest is action but it is very little action and as far as the legal process is concerned, it is very weak,” Vice President of IMANI, Kofi Bentil said.
The suspects who were indicted in an investigative report submitted to the President on alleged fraud at the Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency were invited for investigations and later granted bail.
But speaking to Citi News the Vice President of the IMANI, Kofi Bentil stated that since “an arrest constitutes action … arresting somebody and having the person bailed is so ordinary, it means really nothing.”
In his opinion however, although the arrest by EOCO has made many people happy, “as far as the legal process is concerned, it is very weak.”
According to Mr. Bentil, what we (as a country) expect is that some serious prosecution would be carried out.
“We are hoping to see some serious prosecution, we want to see the matter come to court, we want to see the nature of charges that will be preferred against these people and some seriousness on the part of the Attorney General to bring the matter to court and really fight it out,” he said.
He also tasked the Attorney General to deal with the matter seriously adding that money that belongs to the state has been misappropriated.
“What we need to know is who is to answer for these things and what remedies will come to the state in terms of recovering some of the monies that we have lost,” he added.
