Ashaiman drivers block roads, demand road works
Some commercial vehicle drivers in the Ashaiman municipality have blocked roads in the area in protest over what they describe as the refusal of local authorities to fix the deteriorating roads networks.
According to Citi News’ Ashaiman correspondent, Elvis Washington, activities in the Ashaiman Township in Accra have come to a standstill.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, he noted that private vehicle owners who attempt to use the roads are threatened against doing so.
“The drivers are telling them that they will burn their cars or beat them if they try.”
He noted that the personnel manning the toll booth have also been prevented from collecting the monies because they (commercial drivers) claim “the monies collected are not used to fix the roads.”
He reported that the drivers are burning tires in the middle of the road which has caused unbearable traffic build up the area.
According to one of the drivers who gave his name as Baba Yara, the drivers will not back down until the necessary improvements are made to the road.
“We are not afraid. Not even the Police will stop us!”
Several motorists in the area who have been affected by the situation expressed themselves on various social media site.
