I will return to NPP only if invited as 2028 flagbearer – Alan Kyerematen

Founder and Leader of the United Party, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, has expressed his willingness to rejoin the New Patriotic Party (NPP), but only if he is invited to lead the party as its flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
The former Trade Minister broke away from the NPP in 2023, citing what he described as unfair treatment within the party. He subsequently contested the 2024 general elections as an independent candidate under the Movement for Change before establishing the United Party.
In an interview with DW Africa, Kyerematen said the NPP could strengthen its chances of winning the 2028 elections by adopting the political principles and values he promotes through the United Party.
Asked whether he would accept an invitation to return to the NPP as its flagbearer, he responded affirmatively, stressing that he would need to be in control of the party.
“Yes, if as a flagbearer, okay, I’m controlling the party, then I know it is the only way that they can win power,” he said.
Kyerematen maintained that his commitment to the United Party’s values remained unwavering, describing them as the key to the NPP’s potential electoral success in 2028.
He also argued that neither the NPP nor the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) could guarantee Ghana a prosperous future, insisting that the country needed a different political approach.
