Mahama announces expanded welfare support for Ghana Police Service

President John Dramani Mahama has announced a series of measures to improve the welfare of police officers, including GH¢300 million for the construction of 250 new apartments, additional armoured vehicles and expanded healthcare facilities.
The measures, he said, are aimed at improving the working and living conditions of personnel of the Ghana Police Service while providing them with the necessary protection and support to carry out their duties effectively.
Speaking at the commissioning of an 85-bed ward complex at the Police Hospital in Accra, President Mahama said the government recognised the sacrifices police officers made to maintain law and order and protect lives and property.
He announced that he had requested the Minister of Finance to make provision for GH¢300 million in the 2027 Budget to construct 250 new apartments for police personnel to help ease congestion in some police barracks.
“I have requested the Minister of Finance to provide GH¢300 million in the 2027 Budget to construct 250 new apartments for the police to ease congestion in some of your barracks,” he said.
On operational safety, the President disclosed that the government would soon take delivery of a second batch of 40 armoured vehicles for the Police Service, following the handover of 50 vehicles in December last year.
He added that the government was also procuring additional body armour to improve the protection of officers deployed on operational duties.
President Mahama said the measures were part of broader efforts to equip the Police Service to respond more effectively to security threats while reducing the risks faced by personnel in the line of duty.
On healthcare, he said the commissioning of the new 85-bed ward complex at the Police Hospital represented an important investment in the health and welfare of serving officers and the hospital’s capacity to serve the wider public.
He noted that seven officers injured in the line of duty at Bunkpurugu and Potor were already receiving treatment in the new facility.
The President also announced plans to allocate approximately GH¢200 million in the 2027 Budget to complete the long-delayed Police Hospital expansion project, which has been ongoing for 22 years.
He said the government had decided to terminate the contract with the original contractor following prolonged disagreements and cost overruns, adding that the government would complete the project itself by the end of 2027.
When completed, the expansion is expected to add 106 beds to the hospital, bringing its total capacity to more than 300 beds. The facility will also include a 12-bed intensive care unit, a new accident and emergency centre, additional consulting rooms, diagnostic equipment and specialised surgical theatres.
President Mahama further donated two ambulances to the hospital to strengthen emergency response and facilitate the safe transportation of injured officers and other patients requiring urgent medical attention.
He urged the Police Hospital’s management and health professionals to uphold high standards of hygiene, patient safety and clinical care, stressing that the investment must translate into quality and compassionate treatment.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving police welfare, noting that officers who dedicate their lives to protecting the public deserve adequate housing, appropriate equipment and access to quality healthcare.
He expressed appreciation to the leadership and personnel of the Ghana Police Service for their work in maintaining national security and urged them to sustain their efforts to keep the country safe.
