Gov’t to establish tertiary institution in Ahafo – President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has assured chiefs of the Ahafo Region that the government will establish a tertiary institution in the region before the end of his current term.

President Mahama said work towards fulfilling the promise was already on track, although government was still considering the best approach for delivering the project.

“On education, we promised a tertiary institution for Ahafo. It’s on track. We’re thinking through it, and I can assure you that before the end of my term in office, we will deliver a tertiary educational institution,” he said.

The President made the commitment during the courtesy call by Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs.

His assurance responds to a long-standing call for a tertiary institution to be established in the region to expand access to higher education and support the development of local human capital.

Ahafo became a separate region in 2019 following the creation of six new regions from existing regions.

President Mahama said his administration was deliberately prioritising the six newly created regions to accelerate their development and help address infrastructure gaps.

“We are fast-tracking the development of the six newly created regions,” he said.

Beyond education, the President said government was also taking steps to improve healthcare infrastructure in the newly created regions.

He disclosed that the government plans to provide a first-class regional hospital for each of the six regions.

According to him, funding has been provided in the 2026 Budget for three of the hospitals, with procurement completed and contractors expected to move to site.

He added that the following year’s budget would provide funding for the remaining three regional hospitals.

President Mahama also acknowledged concerns raised by the traditional authorities about schools, transportation and other educational needs in Ahafo.

He said government was procuring buses for schools and would identify institutions with the most urgent transportation needs for support when the buses become available.

The President said the interventions were part of a broader strategy to accelerate development in Ahafo and ensure that residents of the region had better access to essential public services.
