President Mahama inaugurates Fiscal Council to check government spending
President John Dramani Mahama has inaugurated a five-member Independent Fiscal Council tasked with providing independent oversight of the country’s fiscal policy and promoting prudent management of public finances.
The Council will scrutinise government’s fiscal decisions, assess compliance with established fiscal rules, and offer recommendations on effective economic management.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony at the Presidency on Tuesday, President Mahama said the Council had a critical role to play in sustaining economic reforms, rebuilding investor confidence, promoting inclusive economic growth and improving public service delivery.
He urged the members to perform their duties objectively and free from political influence.
“Your responsibility is to scrutinise the Government’s fiscal decisions, assess compliance with established rules, and provide sound recommendations in the national interest,” Mr Mahama said.
The President noted that public expectations for transparency, accountability and prudent financial management were now greater than ever.
He stressed that fiscal responsibility should extend beyond merely complying with legal requirements, describing it as a duty to both current and future generations.
“Fiscal responsibility must not be regarded merely as a statutory requirement; it is a moral obligation to present and future generations,” he said.
President Mahama further urged the Council members to ensure that their work was guided by evidence and the broader national interest, without fear, favour or political considerations.
