Minority blasts 9% salary increase for 2027, says it insults Ghanaian workers

The Minority Caucus on Employment, Labour Relations and Pensions in Parliament has expressed strong opposition to the proposed public sector salary adjustments for 2027 and 2028, describing the 9% increase earmarked for 2027 as an insult to workers struggling with rising living costs.

In a press statement issued on October 30, 2026, the caucus criticised the newly signed Multi-Year Public Service Remuneration Agreement, which was concluded on October 28, arguing that the proposed increases would further weaken workers’ purchasing power.

The agreement provides for an 8% increase in base pay and an additional 1% adjustment in conditions of service for 2027, bringing the total increment to 9%. Public sector workers are also expected to receive a 10% increase in 2028.

However, the Minority maintains that the proposed adjustments are insufficient, considering the rising cost of living and recent increases in utility tariffs.

The caucus further pointed out that although public sector workers received salary increases of 10% in 2025 and 9% in 2026, the adjustments have not adequately matched cumulative inflation.
