Sitting National Treasurer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Charles Dwamena, popularly known in political circles as Dr China, has expressed absolute confidence in the party’s vetting process, describing it as thorough and professional as he seeks a new portfolio in the party’s national executive.
Speaking to the press shortly after appearing before the NPP’s National Vetting Committee at the party headquarters in Accra on Monday ahead of the October 3 National Delegates Conference in Kumasi, Dr Dwamena said he was very excited about how the process has gone so far.
“I’m very excited about the processes so far. I mean, right from the beginning, I indicated that I have absolute confidence in the committee, the National Officers Elections Committee, and all the other committees involved, the vetting and the rest. And indeed, they’ve lived up to expectations,” he stated.
The incumbent treasurer, who is this time contesting for a different portfolio – the General Secretary position – said the questions posed by the committee were very important and pertinent to the future of the party.
“They ask very important and pertinent questions. These were questions that make me feel that indeed everybody recognizes the fact that as National Treasurer, I have excelled, and so there is no fear whatsoever that I’ll do exactly that and more when given the opportunity as General Secretary. So I’m very excited about what has transpired,” he added.
Dr Dwamena, who has served as National Treasurer since 2022 and is credited with helping to stabilize the party’s finances, said he is now ready to bring his disciplined leadership style to the administrative heart of the party.
On what his next steps will be after the successful vetting, the former Deputy Ambassador to China said he will immediately hit the road again to engage delegates.
“So after this place, we will be hitting the road to reach out to the delegates once again,” he disclosed.
When asked about his key message and his mantra for the campaign, especially as some aspirants are using slogans like “we will not allow the NDC to break the 8” and others say “we will not allow the NDC to break the 4”, Dr Dwamena said his mantra is simple and distinct.
“Mine is simple. It’s time to make the elephant wild and make NPP great again,” he declared.
Breaking down what it means to make the elephant well, Dr China outlined a five-point agenda that he believes will heal the party after its 2024 election defeat and prepare it for victory in 2028.
“To make the elephant well, we need to first and foremost enhance the welfare of party members. To make the elephant well, we need to improve upon party communications. To make the elephant well, we need to leverage research and digital solutions to attract the youth and the persons with disabilities and the minorities. To make the elephant well, we need a disciplined leadership,” he explained.
He said that is exactly what he, Dr Charles Dwamena, is offering the party.
“That is what Dr Charles Dwamena is offering. A disciplined leadership that will result in a disciplined party. And within all that, once the elephant gets well, we need to activate proper internal security to ensure that we shepherd the elephant straight to the Jubilee House with Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on top of the elephant,” he said to cheers from his supporters.
Dr Dwamena noted that the NPP’s biggest problem in recent years has been neglect of its base, poor communication and lack of internal discipline, which led to apathy and eventual loss in 2024. He promised to fix that if elected as General Secretary.
He said as Treasurer, he introduced systems that improved financial accountability and transparency, and as General Secretary, he will introduce digital membership verification, welfare fund for polling station executives, and a 24-hour communication system to counter Ndc propaganda.
He also called on delegates to look beyond money and vote for competence, discipline and proven commitment.
The Npp will on October 3, 2026 converge at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi for its National Annual Delegates Conference to elect new national executives who will steer the party for the next four years.
The elections are seen as crucial for the Npp’s quest to reorganize and win back power in the 2028 general elections.
Dr Charles Dwamena, a UK-trained chartered accountant and former Deputy Ghanaian Ambassador to China, is considered one of the most hardworking national executives of the party. His transition from Treasurer to General Secretary aspirant is seen by many analysts as a step up, as he seeks to bring his administrative experience and financial discipline to the running of the party’s secretariat.
With vetting now over for him, Dr China says his focus is clear – to make the elephant healthy again, and lead it back to the Jubilee House.
