Builsa North MP, Hon. James Agalga, has been officially introduced on the floor of Parliament as the new Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business.
The introduction was done by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, as the House reconvened for an emergency sitting from August 24-28 to consider urgent parliamentary business.
In a statement after his introduction, Hon. Agalga said:
“I have today been formally introduced by the Speaker as Majority Leader to lead government business in Parliament. I thank the President, our party leadership, and my colleagues in the Majority. We have a lot of work ahead of us to make the RESET Agenda a lived reality for every Ghanaian family. The work begins now. Ghana will win. To God be the Glory.
”Hon. Agalga, a four-term MP who has represented Builsa North since 2013, takes over from Bawku Central MP, Mahama Ayariga, who was reassigned by President John Dramani Mahama as Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs in the latest reshuffle.
A former Deputy Interior Minister and current Chairman of the Defence and Interior Committee, Agalga is described by colleagues as “solid on procedure, solid on the law” with eight years’ experience as Ranking Member.
His Deputy is Cape Coast South MP, Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, while South Dayi MP Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor remains Majority Chief Whip. Agalga has in recent days dismissed suggestions that he could be bullied in his new role, insisting his long parliamentary experience has prepared him.
“Do I look like somebody who can be bullied? I am not new to leadership in Parliament,” he told Citi FM.
His first major task will be to lead Government business during the emergency recall and push through legislations key to the Mahama administration’s RESET Agenda.
