The Inspector General of Police has charged Regional Commanders to lead the transformation of the Ghana Police Service through daily action, saying Ghanaians want a police service that is present, professional and trusted.
The IGP made the call on Friday at the Regional Commanders Conference held at the National Police Headquarters in Accra.
“They Are Asking For Presence, Professionalism”
Addressing the Hon. Minister of Interior, POMAB members, senior officers and invited guests, the IGP said the demands of Ghanaians on the police are clear and reasonable.
“We convene against the backdrop of a nation that demands more from its police than ever before. Ghanaians are not asking for perfection — they are asking for presence. They are asking for professionalism,” he said.
“They are asking for a police service that does not merely react to crime but prevents it, that does not merely enforce the law but upholds justice, and that does not merely occupy space in the community but earns its trust. These are not unreasonable demands. They are the minimum standards of a modern police service, and we must meet them.”
Security Cooperation and Leadership
The IGP noted that policing does not happen in isolation and stressed the need for stronger coordination within the national security architecture.
He disclosed that the Police Administration, in collaboration with the National Security Council, has arranged for a resource person to take commanders through the amended Security and Intelligence Act, 2026 (Act 1168).
“I urge you to engage with it fully throughout the engagement,” he told the commanders.
He added that transformation of the Service will not come from speeches or directives from Accra alone, but from leadership at the regional and district levels.
“The Ghana Police Service will not be transformed by speeches, conferences, or directives from Accra. It will be transformed by the leadership you exercise every single day in your commands. Every decision you make, every standard you set, every officer you mentor, every case you prioritise — these are the acts that shape the character of this Service.”
A Police Service The People Can Be Proud Of
The IGP said the public is watching the police “not with hostility, but with hope” and wants a service that protects the weak, pursues the guilty and serves the innocent.
“The people of Ghana are watching — not with hostility, but with hope. They want a police service they can be proud of. A police service that is visible, approachable, competent, and just.”
He concluded by reminding officers that the mandate and legal framework are already in place.
“What remains is the will — the will to hold ourselves to the highest standards even when no one is watching.”
He prayed for God’s guidance and protection as officers discharge their lawful duties.
The Regional Commanders Conference brings together all regional commanders to review operations, security threats and strategies ahead of the last quarter of the year.
