Nearly three decades after rapper Tupac Shakur was fatally shot in Las Vegas, the long-awaited trial of Duane “Keffe D” Davis has finally begun, reopening one of hip-hop’s most enduring murder mysteries.
The trial opened on Monday and is expected to continue for about a month.
Davis, a former leader of the South Side Compton Crips, has pleaded not guilty to a charge of murder with a deadly weapon. Prosecutors allege that he orchestrated the shooting that claimed the life of Shakur, who was just 25 years old.
For decades, the circumstances surrounding Shakur’s death have remained the subject of intense speculation, with fans and investigators pursuing numerous theories about who was responsible.
Shakur Shot in Las Vegas
Shakur was in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996, when a vehicle pulled alongside the BMW in which he was travelling.
Gunmen opened fire, hitting the rapper several times.
He was rushed to hospital but died six days later from his injuries, shocking the global music community.
At the time of his death, Shakur was among the biggest stars in hip-hop. He was celebrated for music that explored poverty, violence, inequality and other social issues.
Witnesses Expected to Testify
Prosecutors are expected to call witnesses who saw Shakur in the hours before the shooting, as well as individuals linked to rival record labels and others with knowledge of the events surrounding the attack.
Their testimony could provide insight into the tensions involving Shakur and the circumstances that preceded the fatal shooting.
Davis has previously admitted that he was inside the vehicle from which the gunfire was allegedly launched. However, he has consistently denied being the person who fired the shots.
A Murder That Shook Hip-Hop
Shakur’s death became one of the most high-profile unsolved killings in popular music.
His murder, followed several months later by the killing of fellow rap icon The Notorious B.I.G., further heightened tensions surrounding the East Coast-West Coast rivalry that dominated hip-hop in the 1990s.
Davis’ indictment in 2023 represented a significant development in the decades-long investigation.
The prosecution and defence will now present their respective cases as a jury determines whether Davis played a central role in Shakur’s killing.
After years of unanswered questions and speculation, the trial could finally shed light on one of the most famous murders in music history.
