56,003 GES teachers receive promotion arrears as government targets October deadline for balance

The Ministry of Education has announced that 56,003 Ghana Education Service (GES) teachers have received their promotion-related salary adjustments and arrears, following an agreement reached with teacher unions.

In a press statement issued on Friday, October 16, the Ministry said the payments were made after engagements with the teacher unions and the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD).

It confirmed that the payments covered 56,003 teachers, while validation is ongoing for another 23,367 whose promotion-related arrears are yet to be processed.

According to the Ministry, the GES is expected to complete the validation exercise to enable the CAGD to settle the outstanding payments by the end of October 2026, in accordance with the agreement reached by the parties.

“When finished, the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department will honour the payment by the end of October as agreed by the parties,” the statement said.

The Ministry said the completion of the exercise would help settle outstanding promotion-related arrears owed to the affected teachers.

It expressed appreciation to the leadership of the teacher unions, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, the Ministry of Finance and the CAGD for their cooperation and commitment towards resolving the issue.

The Ministry further assured teachers and the general public that it would continue working with the relevant institutions to ensure the timely processing and payment of all outstanding entitlements.

The statement was issued by Hashmin Mohammed, Press Secretary to the Ministry of Education.
