Ayew Afriyie Has No Interest in NPP Running Mate Slot – Wontumi

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Bosiako, has dismissed claims that Dr. Ayew Afriyie is lobbying to be considered as running mate for the party’s 2028 presidential ticket, describing the reports as baseless and unworthy of attention.
Speaking on Accra-based Asempa FM, Chairman Wontumi said the legislator has never expressed such ambition, either publicly or in private conversations with him. He noted that Ayew Afriyie previously played a role in helping resolve tensions between him and “big brother Napo,” and stressed that decisions about the running mate rest entirely with the NPP flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. According to Wontumi, while various individuals may harbor personal interest in the position, the final choice belongs solely to Bawumia.
Dr Bawumia has yet to announce his running mate for the 2028 elections. Opinion within the party remains divided, with some pushing for him to retain his 2024 running mate, while others argue for a change, citing concerns that the previous pick added little value to the NPP’s performance in the last election cycle.
