Government distributes fertiliser, drones to smallholder farmers under Feed Ghana Programme

The government has begun distributing 40,000 bags of fertilizer to peasant farmers across the country to boost agricultural productivity, increase crop yields, and strengthen national food security. This initiative, which starts today, June 16, is part of the government’s Feed Ghana Programme— a key initiative aimed at providing smallholder farmers with essential agricultural inputs to enhance food production nationwide.
Authorities expect that this intervention will lower production costs for farmers while improving crop nutrition and enhancing yields during the current farming season. The program also aligns with the government’s broader goal of increasing domestic food production and reducing reliance on food imports.
Bright Demordzi, the National Coordinator of the Feed Ghana Programme, emphasized that access to fertilizer is crucial for improving agricultural productivity, especially among smallholder farmers, who contribute significantly to the country’s food supply. He noted that the distribution is being carried out in collaboration with the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana to ensure that fertilizer reaches beneficiaries across all farming zones in the country.
“Our focus is to enable farmers, particularly small-scale ones, to enhance their production and productivity. One of the primary tools for boosting productivity is effective crop nutrition management,” he stated.
Mr. Demordzi highlighted that the Peasant Farmers Association has a nationwide presence, making it an ideal partner for this distribution effort. “The Peasant Farmers Association operates across all crop zones in the country, demonstrating its national reach. The Feed Ghana Programme is partnering with this association to ensure that farmers throughout the country receive the necessary support,” he explained.
He added that the government has collaborated with the association to create a beneficiary database to facilitate a smooth and transparent distribution process. “We have organized their database with the aim of ensuring that all members across the country receive their bags of fertilizer,” he said.
This fertilizer distribution is expected to provide timely assistance to farmers during the planting season, helping them improve yields and contributing to efforts to ensure stable food supplies while moderating food inflation.
