KATH suspends new emergency admissions amid overcrowding

The management of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has announced a temporary suspension of new emergency admissions for the next 24 hours due to severe overcrowding at its Accident and Emergency (A&E) Centre.

In a statement issued in Kumasi and signed by the Head of the Public Affairs Unit, Mr. Kwame Frimpong, the hospital disclosed that its A&E Centre, originally designed as a 37-bed facility, is currently overwhelmed with 61 admitted patients across its Orange, Yellow, and Red critical wards. Additionally, 34 other patients are waiting to be admitted.

As a result, KATH has urged the public to seek emergency care at peripheral hospitals within the Ashanti Region until conditions at the centre improve.

According to the statement, the decision to temporarily halt admissions is intended to ensure the safety and proper management of critically ill patients while medical staff work to reduce the backlog of cases.

The hospital’s management is also collaborating with the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate to facilitate the transfer and management of emergency cases at other health facilities in the region.

KATH assured the public that the situation is under constant review and that new admissions will resume as soon as the pressure on the facility eases.
