Bank of Ghana debunks claims of planned sale of $260m headquarters

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has denounced as false and misleading a recent article that claimed the central bank was preparing to sell its brand-new, state-of-the-art headquarters in Accra. The Bank responded to a June 1, 2026, report titled “Bank of Ghana considering sale of new $260m headquarters – sources” in a press release on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

The Bank of Ghana made it clear that it has no plans, talks, or thoughts about selling its new headquarters. “We urge the public and media to disregard this publication. The Bank Square was built to support the Bank’s operations and improve efficiency in fulfilling its statutory duties, remaining a vital asset.” According to a statement from the central bank’s communications department, unverified reports like this can undermine public confidence in Ghana’s financial system and lead to needless market instability.

The Bank confirmed that it will continue to communicate with stakeholders through official channels and reiterated its commitment to transparency. Verified social media accounts, official press releases from the Communications Department, signed statements from the Bank’s Secretary, and the Bank’s website at bog.gov.gh are all used to disseminate all genuine communications from the Bank. Additionally, the central bank recommended that before publishing any news about its operations, media outlets confirm information with the Bank.

According to the report, which cited insiders, the government-backed current management was pursuing a “sale and leaseback” agreement for The Bank Square, with significant talks taking place to improve the Bank’s balance sheet in light of recent operational losses. Additionally, it claimed that although some board members were against the plan, powerful government figures and influential supporters insisted on moving forward with the sale.

The Bank’s former headquarters, which had been in operation for 69 years, was replaced by the multipurpose Bank Square. Under the previous administration, construction started in 2019, and in November 2024, former President Nana Akufo-Addo issued a commission. In September 2025, the Bank formally relocated its operations to The Bank Square. Seven buildings make up the 150,000-square-meter complex, including The Tower, Ghana’s tallest structure at 100 meters and twenty-two stories.

The Bank of Ghana reaffirmed that all official communications would come through its verified channels and urged the public and media to disregard the publication.
