Dumsor (power fluctuations) caused the yesterday’s fire outbreak at the Kejetia – Shop owners

Traders at the busy Kejetia Market are blaming persistent power outages, commonly known as “dumsor”,for a fire outbreak that occurred yesterday, destroying goods and disrupting business activities.
According to several shop owners, the fire started shortly after electricity supply began fluctuating, with lights repeatedly going off and coming back on. They suspect the unstable power may have triggered an electrical fault that ignited the blaze.
“We noticed the lights were going off and on, and suddenly there was a spark before the fire started,” one trader recounted, adding that efforts to control the flames were initially unsuccessful.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service responded to the scene to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the market. While the full extent of the damage is still being assessed, several reported losing large quantities of goods.
The incident has reignited concerns about the impact of erratic power supply on businesses, particularly in major commercial hubs like Kumasi. Traders are calling on authorities to ensure a stable electricity supply and improve safety measures to prevent similar occurrences.
Investigations into the exact cause of the fire are ongoing.
