Minority Caucus Accuses Gov’t of Worsening Worker Hardship in May Day Statement

The Minority Caucus on Parliament’s Employment, Labour Relations and Pensions Committee has criticized the Mahama administration for what it calls “worsening hardship” facing Ghanaian workers, in a statement marking International Workers’ Day.

Signed by Ranking Member and Afigya Sekyere East MP, Mavis Nkansah-Boadu, the statement said the Caucus “stands in solidarity with workers across Ghana” while raising concerns about conditions in key sectors.

“The reality on the ground are stark and demand urgent attention,” the statement said.

The Caucus cited cocoa farmers “grappling with declining and uncompetitive producer prices,” and pointed to “mass dismissal of workers and job insecurity” across several sectors. It also highlighted delays in salary payments and postings for teachers, and said health professionals “have had to resort to protests simply to receive what is rightfully due to them.”

“These conditions are not only unjust; they undermine morale, productivity, and the very fabric of national development,” Nkansah-Boadu said.

The Minority called on government to “move beyond words of appreciation to meaningful action,” urging it to protect jobs, ensure fair remuneration, address wage arrears, and restore confidence across the economy.

“We therefore strongly condemn the continued unfair treatment of Ghanaian workers and call for its immediate cessation,” the statement added.

The Caucus also urged workers, unions, and stakeholders to “remain united in defending the rights, dignity, and welfare of the labour force.”

Referencing the International Trade Union Confederation Africa’s 2026 theme, “Resetting for Humanism, Peace, Multilateralism, and Socioeconomic Inclusion,” the Minority said it remains committed to advocating for a system that “places people at the centre of development.”

The statement ended with a tribute to workers: “To every worker across the country, your efforts do not go unnoticed. Your sacrifices are the backbone of our nation. Ayekoo to all workers.”
