A communication strategist and longtime Zongo mobilizer, Awal Mohammed, has formally declared his intent to contest as the next National Nasara Organiser of the New Patriotic Party [NPP]*, pledging to rebrand the wing’s work and protect the party’s gains in Zongo communities ahead of the 2028 elections.
The declaration comes months after the NPP’s National Conference structurally elevated the wing from ‘Nasara Coordinator’ to ‘Nasara Organiser’, placing it on equal footing with the Youth and Women’s wings in terms of structure and mandate.
“We Failed To Weave A Powerful Narrative”
Speaking in his declaration statement, Mohammed reflected on the NPP’s 2016 breakthrough with Zongo communities, when the party, then in opposition, made specific manifesto promises to the communities.
“For our eight years in government, we delivered over 200 verifiable, life-changing projects—from modern schools and AstroTurfs to public libraries, made Arabic examinable and direct educational scholarships for our youth home and abroad,” he said.
But he argued the party struggled to sustain those gains because of poor communication.
“Unfortunately, we struggled to sustain our historic 2016 gains because we failed to weave a powerful narrative. We allowed our opponents—who once insultingly promised us mortuaries instead of development—to twist the story,” Mohammed stated.
He criticized calls within the party after the 2024 elections to disband the Nasara wing, blaming the narrative gap rather than the wing’s performance.
“But I blame the lack of narrative, the lack of strategic mobilization, and the gap in voice. We cannot allow our hard work to be erased, and we will never allow our wing to be diminished!”
Mentoring Campus Leaders and Building Structure
Mohammed highlighted what he called a structural weakness: the lack of a pathway for campus Nasara leaders.
“Look at our tertiary institutions. Our campus Nasara Organisers work tirelessly to mobilize Zongo students… But after their year of service, there’s no system to mentor them, track them, or promote them. Out of frustration, we risk losing these bright brains to our opponents,” he said.
He described the rebranding to ‘Nasara Organiser’ as a bold step by party leadership.
“The party has built the vehicle, but we need a completely new energy to occupy this newly rebranded office. We cannot put an old approach into a modernized structure.”
A Decade At The Forefront of Communication
Mohammed positioned his 10 years of service as his qualification for the role. A member of both the Ashanti Regional and National Communications Teams, he said he has been the party’s consistent voice to Hausa-speaking audiences.
“When both local Hausa-speaking media and international media—BBC Hausa, DW Hausa, and the Voice of America (VOA) Hausa—needed the authoritative voice of the NPP… I have always been the one defending the elephant,” he said.
He also cited key roles: Spokesperson for the Transport Policy Committee, a representative for the NPP at the 2024 National Zongo Manifesto Debate at the Ghana National Mosque in Kanda, a national facilitator for Nasara Coordinator training with the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, and a member of the National Zango Campaign Teams in 2020 and 2024.
“A Job To Be Done, Not A Position To Occupy”
Declaring his candidacy, Mohammed said he was answering the call of “our elders, our chiefs and Imams.”
“I am officially declaring my intent to contest as your next National Nasara Organiser to bring competence to this rebranded office, protect our legacy, mentor our youth, and secure a resounding victory for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the NPP in the 2028 elections,” he declared.
“The journey begins today. Let us stop occupying positions, and let us start doing the job!”
He ended with the rallying cry: “A Job to be Done, Not a Position to Occupy! SAI KAAYI! Da yaddan Allah… Aamen”
The Nasara wing plays a critical role in the NPP’s outreach to Muslim and Zongo communities. With the new structural elevation, the contest for National Nasara Organiser is expected to draw significant attention as the party reorganizes ahead of 2028.
