Mahama announces planned 1,200MW gas plant to boost Ghana’s power capacity

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans for the construction of a 1,200-megawatt gas-fired power plant as part of efforts to expand Ghana’s electricity generation capacity and ensure long-term energy security.

Speaking during a town hall meeting as part of his “Resetting Ghana Tour,” the President explained that the proposed project forms a key component of government’s strategy to build adequate power reserves, stabilize supply, and position Ghana as a net exporter of electricity within the sub-region.

President Mahama disclosed that discussions are currently underway with Jubilee partners to facilitate the commencement of the project. According to him, the collaboration is expected to accelerate the delivery of the plant and ensure a reliable fuel supply through Ghana’s offshore gas resources.

He stressed that the initiative is necessary to meet the growing energy demands of households, businesses, and industries, particularly as the country pursues industrial expansion and economic transformation.

“The construction of this 1,200MW gas-fired plant is critical to securing our energy future. We are engaging Jubilee partners, and agreements are ongoing to begin construction,” he stated.

The President further noted that the project will not only enhance generation capacity but also create jobs and stimulate local economic activity during its construction and operational phases.

The planned power plant is expected to significantly strengthen Ghana’s energy mix, reduce the risk of power shortages, and support the government’s broader agenda of building a resilient and export-driven power sector.
