Kwasi Kwarteng Responds to YEA Boss’ Statement on Energy Sector Investigations
Story: Maurice Otoo

In a recent communication, Kwasi Kwarteng, a member of the communication team of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), responded to a statement made by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Mr. Malik Basinteli regarding the suspension of some heads of institutions within the energy sector. Basinteli had raised concerns about the need for investigations into the energy sector due to suspected sabotage to the government.
In a zoom meeting on Kessben TV’s Digest show, Kwasi Kwarteng stated that the issue was not related to reshuffle of institutional heads but capital to purchase crude oil and gas for power generation.
According to Kwarteng, Ghana currently generates about 66% of its energy from thermal sources, 33-39% from hydro, and 3% from renewable energy.
He emphasized the ongoing need for gas, particularly due to the Jubilee fields’ reduction in gas supply by approximately 20 million standard cubic feet, which requires replacement is the reason for power outages.
He further explained that while independent oil drillers are now more focused on crude oil extraction, this has negatively impacted the country’s gas supply.
Consequently, Ghana is not receiving enough gas from oil wells, which hampers efforts to maintain a stable energy supply, he explained.
Kwasi Kwarteng’s concluded by insisting that, the more you focus on crude drilling, the less gas you get , hence our recent struggle in the energy provision
