MMTL kicks against illegal construction on opera square Bus Terminal

Management of Metro Mass Transit (MMTL) has vehemently kicked against the construction of a multi – purpose trading and office complex currently underway on the Opera Square Bus Terminal in the Central Business District (CBD) of Accra by a private developer.

According to the company, the structure and the ongoing works is illegal and have reported to the relevant state institutions to quickly intervene to avert a clash between MMTL workers and the private developer.
Addressing the media in Accra, the Traffic Operations Manager of MMTL, Mr. Ebenezer Marfo said the company was not involved when the said parcel of land was given out to the private developer, adding that the structure is directly on the premises of the company.

He added that, government in it’s quest to revamp the country’s transport system have initiate steps to procure 300 buses for the company as part of the effort to support it’s 24-hour economy and wondered why a private developer to rapidly start construction works on the terminal.
‘’The construction works normally starts late in the nights and runs through the early morning hours’’, he said and pointed out that the activities of the developer ties into attitude of capturing state land with impunity by private individuals.

Mr. Ebenezer Marfo said government holds about 45 percent shares in the company while National Investment Bank (NIB) State Insurance Company (SIC), Prudential Bank, Agricultural Development Bank (ADB), and GLICO own other respective shares.

According to him, the matter was before the law court as the presiding judge advised that both parties must work on out of court settlement, yet construction works is still ongoing, saying management in this regard will engage in a lawful approach to have the issue resolved to safeguard the company’s properties across the country.

He however, appealed to all the state security agencies to develop interest in the nefarious and the clandestine activities of the private developer and ensure that sanity is brought to bear for a lasting peace prevail
