
Mrs. Efua Ghartey, a pioneering figure in Ghana’s legal landscape, has been conferred with the Ghana Women of Excellence Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of her remarkable contributions to the legal profession and broader society.
Mrs. Ghartey’s historic election as the first female President of the Ghana Bar Association marked a watershed moment in the country’s legal history, underscoring her trailblazing leadership and unwavering commitment to the rule of law.
A co-founder of the prestigious law firm Ghartey & Ghartey in 1994 alongside Hon. Joe Ghartey, former Attorney General of Ghana, she brings over three decades of experience in corporate law, litigation, and Alternative Dispute Resolution. Called to the Ghana Bar in 1991 after graduating from the University of Ghana, Mrs. Ghartey also holds advanced certifications in securities and ADR from the Ghana Stock Exchange and California State University’s Sacramento Centre for African Peace and Conflict Resolution. In January 2026, she was awarded a Certificate of Fellowship from the Center for International Mediators and Arbitrators, England and Wales, further cementing her international recognition.
Her career has been distinguished by service and leadership. From serving on the Executive Board of FIDA Ghana (1993–1997) to holding multiple executive positions within the Ghana Bar Association (1998–2007), Mrs. Ghartey has consistently contributed to the advancement of the profession. She also played a pivotal role as moderator of the Chief Justice’s Annual Mentoring Programme (2007–2017), an initiative spearheaded by Ghana’s first female Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Georgina Theodora Wood.
In 2015, Mrs. Ghartey became the second female President of the Greater Accra Branch of the Ghana Bar Association, prior to achieving her historic milestone as the first female national President.
Beyond her legal practice, Mrs. Ghartey has served on over 20 boards both locally and internationally, including as Chairperson of the Global Council of the United Bible Societies (2016–2019), World Vision Ghana (2013–2022), and the Bible Society Ghana (1998–2019). She has also contributed extensively to the governance of the Ghana Alternative Dispute Resolution Centre (2014–2025).
