Relying on Bible and Qur’an for Oaths Not Enough – Bishop J.Y. Adu

Story: Maurice Otoo

A social commentator, Bishop J.Y. Adu, on Kessben TV’s Digest argued that swearing oaths on religious books such as the Bible and the Qur’an is not sufficient to guarantee integrity among public officials.

According to him, individuals who take such oaths may still act based on their personal character rather than the moral expectations attached to the religious texts.

Bishop Adu also described it as wrong for a sitting President to appoint the Auditor-General of Ghana, arguing that such arrangements could create situations where officials may feel pressured to favor one another instead of acting independently in the interest of the country.

He further noted that many citizens tend to prioritize personal interests over national loyalty, a situation he believes undermines accountability and good governance.

The social commentator also criticized provisions in the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, stating that it does not adequately address concerns surrounding the appointment of heads of key state institutions.

Bishop Adu therefore called for reforms that would strengthen institutional independence and promote greater accountability in the management of public offices.
