Decouple politics from national sanitation drive – Local Gov’t Minister

The Minister for Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD), Samuel Ofosu Ampofo has implored Ghanaians to decouple politics from the ongoing national sanitation exercise which seeks to clear the nation of filth.
He noted with deep concern that diseases borne out of untidy environment have no respect for people based on their political colorations.
He insisted that the nationwide weekly clean-up exercise required the patronage of everybody to ensure a healthy nation.
He was speaking over the weekend during a massive clean-up exercise at Tema One and Two communities as well as Nungua all in the Greater Accra Metropolis.
According to Mr. Ampofo, the challenges associated with waste management are enormous, hence government and its allied bodies’ determination to tackle the situation.
Mr. Ampofo said public education on the exercise would be intensified to get everybody on board.
He commended personnel from the Army, the Fire Service and staff of Zoom Alliance for attaching importance to the exercise.
The National Sanitation Task Force which is under the auspices of the Local Government Ministry in collaboration with Zoom Alliance was officially inaugurated and charged with the responsibility of keeping Ghana clean across board.
As a critical government initiative, the nationwide exercise is in line with President John Dramani Mahama’s directive that all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in collaboration with the Zoom Alliance should guarantee that the nation is cleared of filth.
This is expected not to only promote healthy living but attract foreign investors.
The Task Force has so far engaged about 16,250 workers nationwide. Zoom Alliance has provided 20 compactor trucks, 10 borla taxis, 20 skip trucks, wheel barrows and wellington boots to accomplish the task within a period of 10 weeks.
A Sanitation Guard comprising the security agencies have embarked on a nationwide public sensitization campaign.
