Global Recognition: President Mahama Ranked 5th Most Powerful Person Worldwide

President John Mahama of Ghana has been ranked fifth on the prestigious Devex Power 50 list, recognizing the world’s most influential figures in global development and changemaking.

The annual list by Devex, a leading development publication, highlights individuals transforming the sector amid shifting global aid dynamics. Mahama earned his spot for spearheading the Accra Reset, a bold initiative designed to reshape Africa’s engagement with the global North.

The Accra Reset aims to reduce reliance on traditional foreign aid by promoting domestic resource mobilization, strengthening regional trade through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and leveraging technology to accelerate development. Devex praised Mahama for moving beyond rhetoric, implementing market-driven policies that attract development finance while safeguarding national sovereignty.

By ranking Mahama fifth, Devex acknowledges the growing influence of African leadership in global development. The list also features innovators from philanthropy, finance, health, and technology, including figures such as Alexander Berger (Open Philanthropy), Keller Rinaudo Cliffton (Zipline), and Muhammad Ali Pate (global health).

“President Mahama’s inclusion reflects a new generation of leaders shaping global progress from capitals like Accra,” Devex noted. “His leadership through the Accra Reset marks a significant turn in how developing nations assert their voice in international decision-making.”

The ranking underscores Ghana’s emergence as a regional hub for innovation and development policy, and positions Mahama among global leaders driving a “post-aid” vision for Africa.
