Ideally, ECG should not be making losses – Akuoko Frimpong reacts to Ghana’s energy debt

Akuoko Frimpong, former District Chief Executive (DCE) for Sekyere Central, has weighed in on Ghana’s growing energy sector debt, stating emphatically that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) should not, under normal circumstances, be making losses.
Speaking on Kessben FM, Frimpong expressed concern about the persistent financial challenges facing the power distribution company despite its central role in the country’s energy value chain.
According to him, ECG operates in a sector where demand is guaranteed, making continuous losses difficult to justify. “Ideally, ECG should not be making losses,” he noted, stressing that electricity is an essential service consumed daily by households, businesses, and industries across the country. For Frimpong, the problem lies not in demand but in systemic inefficiencies.
He pointed to issues such as power theft, poor revenue collection, technical and commercial losses, and weak enforcement mechanisms as key contributors to ECG’s financial woes. Frimpong also highlighted political interference and ineffective management structures, which he believes have undermined the company’s ability to operate on sound commercial principles.
Reacting to Ghana’s mounting energy debt, the former DCE warned that the situation poses a serious threat to economic stability if left unaddressed.
