Not allowing MPs to be ministers will reduce vote buying and make those who really want to work contest for parliamentary elections – Lawyer Dominic Brenya Okyere

Private legal practitioner Dominic Brenya Okyere has welcomed the Constitution Review Committee’s recommendation to bar Members of Parliament from being appointed as ministers, describing it as a move that could significantly reduce vote buying and improve the quality of parliamentary representation.
Speaking on Kessben FM he said the current system encourages excessive spending and inducements during parliamentary elections, as many candidates contest primarily for the possibility of securing ministerial appointments rather than to serve constituents in Parliament. Preventing MPs from becoming ministers, he argued, would remove this incentive and discourage vote buying and monetization of politics.
He further noted that such a reform would attract individuals who are genuinely interested in legislative work and constituency advocacy, rather than executive ambition.
He added that separating the executive from the legislature would also strengthen Parliament’s oversight role and deepen democratic accountability. He urged Ghanaians to engage constructively with the Constitution Review Committee’s proposals to ensure reforms that promote integrity, fairness, and effective governance.
