Not enough basis for the extension of the presidential term from 4 to 5 years. I disagree with that – Lawyer Dominic Brenya Okyere

Private legal practitioner Dominic Brenya Okyere has expressed strong disagreement with the Constitution Review Committee’s recommendation to extend Ghana’s presidential term from four to five years, describing it as lacking sufficient constitutional and democratic basis.
Speaking in an interview with Wofa Kofi Appiah on Kessben FM, Okyere argued that the current four-year term remains adequate for effective governance and accountability.
According to him, extending the presidential term could weaken democratic checks by reducing the frequency with which leaders are held accountable through elections. He noted that any proposal to alter the length of a presidential term must be supported by clear evidence that it will improve governance outcomes, rather than convenience for officeholders. In his view, such justification has not been convincingly presented by the Constitution Review Committee.
He further emphasized that constitutional reforms should prioritize strengthening institutions and deepening democracy, not merely adjusting timelines. He urged policymakers and the public to critically examine the broader implications of the recommendation and ensure that any constitutional changes truly reflect the will and long-term interests of the Ghanaian people.
