Ghana Calls for Reform of Kimberley Process to Address Evolving Conflicts

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board Mr Sammy Gyamfi has urged the Kimberley Process to adapt to the changing nature of conflicts affecting diamond communities, emphasizing that the current definition of “conflict diamonds” is no longer sufficient.

In a speech delivered at the Kimberley Process Ministerial Meeting in Dubai, UAE, on November 20, 2025, the CEO highlighted the need for incremental reform, stating that consensus should be a path to progress, not paralysis.

The CEO acknowledged the legitimacy of concerns and aspirations embedded in proposals for reform, urging participants to focus on areas of convergence and pursue solutions that protect vulnerable populations while safeguarding legitimate trade.

The call for reform comes as diamond communities continue to face exploitation, dispossession, and exclusion, with many still living with the scars of conflict.

The Kimberley Process, established over two decades ago, has been hailed as a historic achievement in preventing the trade of conflict diamonds. However, the CEO emphasized that the process must evolve to address the changing landscape of the diamond trade.
