426 Residents Benefit from Comprehensive Health Screening and NHIA Card Support Exercise in Gbawe East

More than 426 residents from the Gbawe East Electoral Area in the Weija–Gbawe Municipality have benefited from a comprehensive community health screening initiative spearheaded by the Young Progressive Network, in partnership with the Magdee Global Foundation, and supported by the Assembly Member for Gbawe East, Hon. Benjamin Ken Lartey, together with his Unit Committee members.

As an additional social support component, the Young Progressive Network facilitated the registration, renewal, and replacement of close to 300 National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) cards to help residents gain access to affordable and sustained healthcare services under the National Health Insurance Scheme.

This intervention was particularly critical for low-income households and vulnerable individuals who often face challenges accessing healthcare due to financial constraints.

The screening exercise targeted a wide cross-section of the community, consisting of 297 females, 81 males, and 48 children. Medical personnel on site conducted breast cancer screening, blood pressure checks, Hepatitis B testing, malaria tests, and general health assessments.

The results of the screening revealed a number of notable health concerns.

28 women were found to have breast-related abnormalities and have been referred for further medical examination and possible treatment.

17 children were diagnosed with malaria, a disease that remains one of the most common illnesses affecting children in the country. Additionally, 43 individuals tested positive for Hepatitis B, underscoring the need for intensified public health education and vaccination advocacy in the community.

The event was themed “Early Detection Saves Lives: Together, We Can Beat Breast Cancer,” a message aimed at inspiring preventive health habits and encouraging community members to regularly undergo medical screening.

Speaking at the event, Convener of the Young Progressive Network, Patrick Asford Boadu, expressed profound appreciation to Greenland Medical Supplies Limited and Rokmer Pharma Limited for providing medical supplies and logistical support.

He noted that the Network remains committed to championing public health awareness and community development initiatives across the municipality.

“This exercise forms part of our mission to bring healthcare closer to the people, particularly those who are unable to afford regular medical check-ups. We believe that a healthy community is the foundation of sustainable development,” he stated.

President and Founder of the Magdee Global Foundation, Miss. Magdaline Comfort Asirifi, encouraged residents to adopt a proactive approach towards their health by undertaking periodic check-ups.

“Most illnesses can be treated successfully when identified early. As individuals, we must take our health seriously and seek medical attention regularly, rather than waiting until conditions become severe,” she advised.

Assembly Member for the Gbawe East Electoral Area, Hon. Benjamin Ken Lartey, commended the organizers and pledged that such health screening exercises would be held quarterly to ensure consistent community health monitoring and support.

“Our goal is to build a healthier community. We will continue to mobilize resources and partnerships to make healthcare accessible to our people,” he assured.

This initiative highlights the power of community collaboration, civic leadership, and non-profit commitment in advancing public health and improving the overall well-being of residents in Gbawe East.
