UN@80: Hon Okudjeto Ablakwa Calls for Renewed Commitment to Multilateralism

As the world commemorates the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has emphasized the need for renewed commitment to multilateralism in addressing global challenges. Speaking at the UN@80 High-Level Dialogue, Ablakwa stressed that the United Nations must evolve into a more agile, representative, and responsive institution capable of addressing 21st-century realities.
Reforming the UN Security Council
Ablakwa highlighted the importance of reforming the UN Security Council to ensure genuine representation and inclusivity, particularly for Africa, which has long been calling for permanent representation. This demand is echoed by regions such as Latin America and Asia, reflecting the global desire for a fairer and more inclusive system that mirrors today’s geopolitical and economic realities.
Partnership and Coordination
The minister emphasized the need for partnership and coordination between the UN and regional organizations, such as the African Union and CARICOM, to ensure peacebuilding, development, and humanitarian initiatives are locally informed and regionally owned. By working together, nations can foster a more networked, inclusive, and effective multilateralism that reflects the diversity of voices and experiences shaping the world today.
Addressing Global Challenges
Ablakwa highlighted the urgent need to address the climate crisis, ensuring that those most affected receive the support they need to build resilience and protect livelihoods. He also emphasized the importance of reforming international financial institutions to ensure developing economies have a meaningful role in global decision-making.
Condemning Attacks on Humanitarian Aid Workers
The minister condemned the rising attacks on humanitarian aid workers, emphasizing the need for decisive political commitment to keep humanitarian personnel safe and enable them to do their lifesaving work in conflict and disaster zones.
A Renewed Commitment
As the world looks to the future, Ablakwa called for a renewed commitment to collective action, guided by the principles of solidarity, inclusivity, and shared responsibility that lie at the heart of the United Nations. By working together, nations can build trust, deepen cooperation, and uphold the ideals of peace, justice, and sustainable development for all.
UN Resident Coordinator’s Remarks
The UN Resident Coordinator, Zia Choudhury, underscored the importance of dialogue, cooperation, and multilateralism in building a better future for all. He highlighted the devastating consequences of global conflict and stressed that progress toward a peaceful and prosperous future required shared responsibility, strong partnerships, and renewed commitment to multilateral cooperation.
Global Challenges Require Coordinated Action
Mr. Choudhury identified pressing global challenges, including climate change, displacement, inequality, misinformation, and the erosion of institutions established to maintain peace and justice. He called for stronger collaboration between countries and the UN to reaffirm commitments to peace and security, accelerate climate action, and promote inclusive development.
By working together, nations can build a more just, inclusive, and sustainable world, reaffirming the common vision and call to action for a United Nations that is more effective, representative, and fit for purpose in this rapidly changing world.
