President Mahama Nominates Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Chief Justice of Ghana

President John Dramani Mahama has officially nominated His Lordship Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie to serve as Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana, forwarding his name to the Council of State for consideration in accordance with Article 144(1) of the 1992 Constitution.
The nomination formalizes Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s position, who has been serving as Acting Chief Justice since April 22, 2025. If confirmed, he will lead Ghana’s Supreme Court and oversee the country’s judicial system.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie brings decades of judicial experience to the role, having served with distinction across all levels of Ghana’s court system. His career spans the High Court, Court of Appeal, and currently the Supreme Court, where he has built a reputation for excellence and integrity.
“Justice Baffoe-Bonnie has, throughout his distinguished judicial career, served with diligence and integrity,” said Felix Kwakye Ofosu, MP and Spokesperson to the President, in announcing the nomination. “He has made invaluable contributions to the development of Ghanaian jurisprudence.”
The nominee has earned widespread respect within Ghana’s legal community for his intellectual rigor and unwavering commitment to justice. His impartial approach to judicial matters has garnered esteem from both the Bench and the Bar, as well as the broader legal fraternity.
“He has earned the esteem of the Bench, the Bar, and the wider legal fraternity for his intellect, impartiality, and unwavering commitment to justice,” Ofosu noted in the official statement.
The nomination now moves to the Council of State for consideration, as required by Ghana’s constitutional framework. This process ensures proper vetting and consultation before the final appointment to one of the country’s most important judicial positions.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s “wealth of experience and long service on the Bench render him eminently qualified for the high office of Chief Justice,” according to the President’s spokesperson.
The nomination represents President Mahama’s commitment to maintaining strong judicial leadership and ensuring continuity in Ghana’s legal system during his administration.
