Ministry of Sports and Recreation Outlines Six Key Policy Areas for Sports Medicine in Ghana

Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddrisu Adams, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prioritising sports medicine in the country’s sports development agenda. Speaking at the 2025 Sports Medicine Conference at KNUST, the Minister outlined six key policy areas to transform medical support in sports:

1. Event Medical Minimums: A “No Ambulance, No Event” rule for sanctioned competitions.
2. Universal Pre-Participation Screening: Mandatory annual health assessments for athletes.
3. Workforce Development: Certification of at least 200 sports medicine professionals within a year.
4. Injury and Illness Surveillance: Launching a national data system for prevention and treatment.
5. Clean Sport: Enhanced anti-doping education, testing, and regulation.
6. Governance and Insurance: Strengthened medical regulations and mandatory athlete medical insurance.
The Minister assured full government support, including regulation, co-funding, and enforcement, in collaboration with relevant ministries. He emphasised sports medicine’s crucial role in Ghana’s sports development, from grassroots to elite levels.
The conference, accredited for Continuing Professional Development (CPD), aimed to set benchmarks and mobilise practitioners. The Minister praised the Sports Medicine Association-Ghana (SMA-Ghana) for convening the event, marking a step forward in embedding evidence-based practice, athlete safety, and clinical accountability in Ghana’s sports ecosystem.
