FIFA Launches Investigation Into Argentina After World Cup Final Clashes
FIFA has opened a disciplinary investigation into Argentina following the heated incidents that unfolded after the final whistle of the 2026 World Cup final at MetLife Stadium.
The governing body confirmed that its disciplinary committee has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to review the events that took place at the end of Sunday’s match. Players or coaching staff found responsible could face suspensions, while the Argentine Football Association (AFA) may also be subject to financial penalties.
Tensions flared after Argentina’s 1-0 defeat to Spain, as several members of the Argentine squad and coaching staff became involved in confrontations with Spanish players celebrating their World Cup triumph.
Among those seen during the altercations were Nahuel Molina, Leandro Paredes, Thiago Almada, and assistant coach Roberto Ayala.
Initial reports from FIFA’s commentator information system mistakenly stated that referee Slavko Vinčić had shown Paredes a red card for allegedly pushing Spain defender Eric García by the throat. However, the dismissal was later removed, and FIFA confirmed to BBC Sport that no disciplinary action was taken against Paredes during the match.
Argentina had already finished the game with 10 players after Enzo Fernández was sent off for a second yellow card during second-half stoppage time.
Separately, FIFA had already begun considering possible disciplinary measures against Argentina after players displayed a banner supporting the country’s claim to the Falkland Islands following their 2-1 semi-final victory over England.
