President Mahama Calls for Unity in Bawku While Unveiling Savannah Development Plan

Ghana’s President H.E John Dramani Mahama has delivered a passionate plea for peace, punctuated by direct calls for national reconciliation and regional harmony.

Speaking on Monday, 20th July, 2025 at the Presidency during the courtesy visit by the King and Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom and Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale (I), President Mahama emphasized the critical importance of peace and national unity amid the tension in Bawku and enclaves.

“We cannot accept the current situation where students are shot in school and killed,” President Mahama stated.

Addressing ongoing conflicts in Bawku, President Mahama emphasised a zero-tolerance approach to violence, stating,

“We can’t accept the current situation where teachers, public officers have all run away from Boko because they are afraid for their lives.” President Mahama.

The President of Ghana announced a strategic shift in conflict management, revealing that he has “directed the Ghana Army to move from peacekeeping to peace enforcement,” signalling a more robust approach to maintaining national stability in Bawku and surrounding.

Highlighting the importance of unity, he urged communities to “give peace a chance,” and stressed that “there can be no progress without peace.”

He specifically commended the Gonja Kingdom for maintaining regional tranquillity, noting, “I wish to commend you for the peace that reigns in Gonja land.” He added.

Alongside the peace initiative, President Mahama unveiled a comprehensive development plan for the Savannah region, including:

– A regional hospital in Damango

– 10 kilometers of roads per district annually

– A regional university college

– Agricultural support programs

– Youth employment initiatives

“Let us see each other as each other’s keeper,” he proclaimed, emphasizing a vision of inclusive development where “no child in Savannah region is left behind.”

The royal visit symbolized a powerful moment of national reconciliation, with the President declaring, “The values of unity, patriotism and compassion are more urgent than ever.
