NPP National Delegates Conference : Over 600 Journalists to Cover Event

More than 600 journalists from across Ghana have been accredited to cover the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Delegates Conference slated for Friday, July 18 to Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra.
The conference, which is expected to attract over 5,500 delegates nationwide, marks a critical milestone for the governing party as it seeks to rebuild and reposition itself in the aftermath of the 2024 general elections. The event is being held under the theme, “Rebuilding Together with Our Values.”
According to the Planning Committee, led by Joseph Osei-Owusu, the number of accredited media professionals, drawn from print, broadcast, and online platforms, reflects the high level of national interest in the outcomes of the two-day conference, which will focus on internal reforms, constitutional amendments, and party cohesion.
Speaking to the media in Accra ahead of the Congress, Mr. Osei-Owusu reaffirmed that preparations were complete, noting that the party was fully ready for the event despite petitions calling for a change in the date. “The steps that we have taken are far too deep to turn back. We are going ahead with the conference,” he stressed.
*Journalists to document defining moment*
The high media turnout is expected to ensure transparency and widespread public engagement as the NPP confronts internal challenges and charts a new course forward. With key reports from the General Secretary, National Chairman, and National Treasurer to be presented, and a raft of reform proposals to be debated, journalists will play a crucial role in informing Ghanaians about the decisions taken and their implications.
*What to expect*
Some of the most developments include constitutional amendments proposed by the Frank Davies Committee, which aim to modernize party structures and promote internal democracy. Delegates will also deliberate on the party’s electoral performance and new strategies ahead of the 2028 polls.
Former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will address the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2025 National Delegates Congress virtually, party sources have confirmed.
The two former leaders are unable to attend the high-stakes Congress due to circumstances described as “beyond their control.”
Delegates from all 16 regions are expected to converge for discussions aimed at repositioning the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Immediate past President Nana Akufo-Addo, who has been out of the country for some time, is unable to return for the Congress. He was already outside the jurisdiction when the NPP’s National Council officially fixed the July 19 date, and party insiders now confirm he will not be able to make the trip back in time for the event.
Former President John Agyekum Kufuor, who recently participated in the launch of the party’s ideological training centre, the Patriotic Institute, is also unavailable to attend the Congress in person.
Sources close to the party’s top leadership confirmed that both statesmen will deliver their messages via video link during the event.
*Reforms and resolutions*
Henry Nana Boakye, the party’s National Organiser, popularly known as Nana B, reiterated on the Asaase Breakfast Show that the conference is not a campaign event but rather a constitutionally mandated gathering of delegates and stakeholders. He emphasized that the reforms being considered are rooted in extensive consultations and are meant to strengthen the party’s foundations.
Nana B disclosed that key venues, including Anagkazo and UPSA, were booked months in advance to accommodate the influx of delegates and media professionals. He also dismissed claims that former President John Agyekum Kufuor had called for a postponement of the event, clarifying that the former President would participate virtually due to prior international commitments.
*Unity, Transparency*
Responding to questions about internal divisions and the fallout from the Ablekuma North rerun, Mr. Osei-Owusu noted that the party had taken steps to preserve unity and discipline. He confirmed that the party accepted an apology from the parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, and reiterated the NPP’s commitment to upholding internal procedures.
Meanwhile, Nana B addressed concerns over potential bias in the upcoming presidential primaries, saying the party leadership had no intention of favouring any candidate. “This is a party of nearly 400,000 delegates. Nobody can control such a number to favour a single person,” he added.
