Gov’t to table Scholarship Authority Bill to Parliament to curb nepotism —Haruna Iddrisu, Education Minister

Next week, the government will introduce the eagerly anticipated Scholarship Authority Bill to Parliament in an attempt to eradicate political favoritism and nepotism in scholarship distribution.
The declaration was made by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu at the inauguration of the government’s flagship “Noinitiative called “Fees Stress Policy” at the Koforidua-based SDA College of Education on Friday.
President John Dramani Mahama performed the ceremony, which was a major turning point in the administration’s efforts to increase access to higher education for all.
According to Mr. Iddrisu, the proposed legislation would establish an open and responsible legislative framework for the management of scholarships, guaranteeing that only worthy and eligible students, not those with political ties, would get government funding.
“Next week, in honor of one of your campaign policies and in response to a significant campaign pledge, I will present the Scholarship Authority Bill to Parliament to address the nepotism and cronyism that were connected to the scholarship award program,” he said.
One of President Mahama’s legacy initiatives in education, the Presidential Scholarship Scheme, was also unveiled by the Minister. Supporting exceptional kids in vital subjects like science will be its main goal.
“So the President’s Scholarship for Scholarship would honour 10 brilliant students, determined and declared by the West African Examinations Council, as the overall best students in the country,” he announced.
“Then the President will then absorb them to benefit from his scholarship and to have his full tenure.”
Speaking about the newly launched “No Fees Stress Policy,” Mr. Iddrisu described President Mahama as a “fountain of honour,” saying the policy would directly benefit first-year students in public tertiary institutions nationwide.“Today from that fountain, they will drink with the students in our first year tertiary public institutions across
Ghana,” he said.
