IET-GHPresident Urges Government to Revoke LI 2462 and Declare State of Emergency Over Galamsey Crisis

Engr. Henry Kwadwo Boateng, President of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Ghana (IET-GH), has made a passionate appeal to the government to urgently address the escalating illegal mining (galamsey) crisis that is devastating forest reserves and water bodies across the country.

Speaking at a press conference organized by the Coalition Against Illegal Mining, Engr. Boateng called on the government to fulfill its pre- and post-election promises by revoking Legislative Instrument (LI) 2462 and declaring a state of emergency in the affected areas.

“The future of our land and people depends on it,” he declared. “His Excellency John Dramani Mahama cannot and must not disappoint us. The time for action is now.”

He expressed deep concern over the government’s inaction in the face of widespread environmental destruction, stating, “It is difficult to understand why stopping illegal mining has become so challenging. This is a direct threat to our survival as a people.”

Engr. Boateng condemned what he described as “state capture by a few greedy individuals” who continue to benefit from galamsey operations at the expense of the wider population and future generations. He urged swift and decisive action to halt the destruction, warning that continued delay would only deepen the crisis.

“The deep state must not hold this country hostage. We must reclaim our lands, protect our water bodies, and secure the future,” he emphasized.

The Coalition Against Illegal Mining continues to push for decisive government intervention, emphasizing that reversing the damage caused by galamsey requires political will, transparency, and urgent enforcement of environmental laws.
