If you owe people and you don’t have the money yet, speak to them, don’t play hide-and-seek” – Rev. Vincent Kankam (Sofo Kankam)

Rev. Vincent Kankam has offered a timely and compassionate message, stressing that “If you are owing people and you don’t have the money yet, call them and talk nicely to them, don’t play hide-and-seek with them.”

This statement highlights a core principle Rev Kankam often emphasizes in his teachings integrity in difficult moments. At a time when economic hardship can lead people to withdraw in shame or fear, Rev Kankam advocates for openness, humility, and respect in how we manage our debts and relationships.

Debt can be a deeply personal and often shameful experience. It’s not just about money, it’s about trust, responsibility, and reputation. But rather than allowing debt to fracture relationships and erode one’s self-worth, Rev Kankam encourages people to take a more human and honest approach: communicate.

“When people lend you money, they trust you,” he explains. “So even if you don’t have the means to repay them now, showing them the courtesy of communication keeps that trust alive.”

According to Rev Kankam, avoiding creditors or cutting off communication only adds fuel to the fire. It creates tension, breeds mistrust, and often escalates the situation. Worse still, it damages your reputation not just in the eyes of the person you owe, but within your broader community or network.

“Playing hide-and-seek only makes you look irresponsible,” he says. “It’s not about whether you have the money today, it’s about whether you respect the person enough to be honest with them.”

Rev Kankam’s message extends beyond personal finance; it reflects a broader value of respect and accountability in all areas of life. In times of crisis, people often feel isolated, embarrassed, or anxious about being judged. But honest communication, he argues, opens the door to understanding and often, grace.

His advice is practical, but it’s also deeply ethical: be honest, be humble, and maintain the dignity of the people around you even when you’re struggling.
