President Mahama is committed to grassroots sports development in Ghana – Sports Minister, Kofi Iddie Adams
Kofi Iddie Adams, Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, emphasized President John Dramani Mahama’s unwavering commitment to the development of grassroots sports across the nation. Adams highlighted that the President’s vision encompasses a comprehensive approach to nurturing young talent and revitalizing the country’s sporting infrastructure.
“The President has made it clear that the development of grassroots sports is a top priority,” Adams remarked. “This commitment is evident in the initiatives we’ve undertaken to ensure that sports are accessible to all, from the school level to the community level.”
Establishment of the School Sports Authority: A significant move towards institutionalizing sports development is the creation of the School Sports Authority. This body aims to oversee and coordinate sports activities within schools, ensuring a structured pathway for young athletes to develop their skills from an early age. Adams noted that this initiative would provide the necessary framework for identifying and nurturing talent within the educational system
Revitalization of Inter-Collegiate Competitions: Recognizing the importance of competitive platforms in honing athletic skills, the government is working to revive inter-collegiate sports competitions. These events serve as a breeding ground for emerging talents and foster a culture of sportsmanship among students.
Investment in Sports Infrastructure: The administration is committed to improving sports facilities across the country. This includes upgrading existing structures and constructing new ones to provide athletes with the resources they need to excel.
Minister Adams emphasized that the focus on grassroots sports is not merely about producing elite athletes but also about promoting physical activity and healthy lifestyles among the youth. By investing in sports from the ground up, the government aims to build a robust sporting culture that will yield long-term benefits for the nation.
