Ghana and Japan Strengthen Energy Ties: Exchange Notes on Tamale Power Stabilization Project

Ghana and Japan are embarking on a project that will serve to stabilize power supply in the Eastern Corridor of Ghana, i.e. Tamale, Yendi, and several other cities and towns in that environ, a need which the Government of Japan is assisting Ghana to meet. On the basis of the foregoing, a signing ceremony took place between the Minister for Foreign Affairs,

Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and H.E. Hiroshi Yoshimoto, the Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, on Monday 10th March, 2025 at the Ministry.

During the ceremony, Honourable Ablakwa expressed gratitude to the Japanese Government on behalf of the andpeople of Ghana.

He described the warm relations that exist between Ghana and Japan, detailing aid and other developmental assistance offered by Japan to Ghana. He paid tribute to Hideyo Noguchi, who died researching yellow fever in Ghana, stating that he “paid the ultimate price” out of love for the country.

The Minister indicated that the power infrastructure in the Eastern Corridor of the country was fragile, making it difficult for the Northen Electricity Company to supply power to the people. He acknowledged that the project would help improve the energy situation in the Eastern Corridor.

H.E. Yoshimoto, in his remarks, mentioned that the signing Ceremony was his first major signing since he assumed his position in December of 2024, stating that there was no better way to mark the occasion than to share it with Ghana.

He praised Honourable Ablakwa for his commitment to further strengthening relations between Japan and Ghana, and reaffirmed Japan’s dedication to help meet the Eastern Corridor’s energy needs.

Overall, both sides acknowledged that this partnership marks a new chapter in Ghana-Japan relations, showcasing a shared commitment to enhancing collaboration in diverse areas.
