Open Letter To Dr. Randy Abbey

Dear Dr. Randy Abbey,

I have learnt with sadness that you have resigned from Metro TV, effective today, January 8, 2025, bringing to an end your 23 years of distinguished media practice particularly as the host of the multiple award winning Good Morning Ghana (GMG) show. You are leaving behind an indelible and trailblazing legacy in Ghanaian broadcasting, that is worth celebrating.

Your GMG is undoubtedly, one of the oldest political shows in the country and the favorite of many. I am closely connected with the show having been a regular contributor/texter to the show for over 17 years. And indeed, I consider myself as one of the greatest beneficiaries of the show.

I have become quite ‘popular’ in my small world through my contributions on GMG. Sometimes when I attend programmes and mention my name, people ask me, is it the same Iddi Muhayu-Deen of GMG?

When I was contesting for General Secretary of National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) sometime in 2014, GMG became my campaign vehicle and I won by a landslide, even though I could not afford to do a single campaign banner.

Through my contributions on GMG, John Boadu, then as National Organizer of NPP, learnt about me and contacted me directly. He later became my immediate boss. I got to meet a lot of party kingpins because of my exploits on GMG.

Again, I am a lawyer today, largely because of the sustained advocacy of GMG and Dr. Randy Abbey, who took on the General Legal Council, and mounted pressure on them to expand access to legal education. Indeed, my colleagues and I, the 499 cohorts, who were almost denied entry into the law school (Makola), will forever be grateful to you.

Dr. Randy, you are a Godsend to some of us. When you became critical of my party and government, some members of the party had serious issues with you. But I dare say, the outcome of the 2024 elections has vindicated you. If we had listened to you, my party will probably not be in opposition today.

I cannot thank you enough for the great impact you have had in my life particularly through your platform, GMG, my favorite current affairs show on tv. You will be greatly missed. I can only wish you the very best in your next chapter.

Alhaji Iddi Muhayu-Deen, ESQ.
