Kwesi Appiah makes another history as he becomes the first Ghanaian coach to defeat Black Stars
Making history, Kwesi Appiah is the first Ghanaian coach to guide a different national side to victory over the Black Stars.
In addition to advancing them toward the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualification spot, his Sudanese team’s thrilling 2-0 victory on Tuesday demonstrated Appiah’s strategic skill.
When David Duncan led the Black Starlets in the 2005 African U-17 Championship final, Osam Duodu, who passed away, led the Gambia to win over Ghana, becoming the last coach to defeat Ghana. But thanks to Appiah’s accomplishment, the Black Stars have not been defeated by a Ghanaian coach before.
In the past, Appiah managed the Black Stars for two terms, creating history as the first Ghanaian coach to lead his country to the World Cup in 2014. But in 2019, he was fired.
Despite Sudan’s political difficulties, Appiah has had amazing success since entering office. Sudan was a sinking ship when he took over, but they are currently only one win away from qualifying for the AFCON for the first time since 2021. They are also now ahead of Senegal in their 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
