Next Southampton manager: Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney interested in job

Southampton have begun their search for a new manager to replace Nathan Jones and are not short of interested candidates, sources have told 90min.

The Saints confirmed on Sunday morning that they had parted company with Jones following a run of one win in nine Premier League games.

Now bottom of the table and four points from safety, Southampton are looking for a new boss, and some managers have already thrown their hat in the ring.

90min understands that Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard, who were sacked by Everton and Aston Villa respectively earlier this season, are interested in taking the job. D.C. United manager Wayne Rooney too would like the role, and intermediaries from each of their camps have touched base with the Saints.

Liverpool legend Gerrard is also a candidate to fill the vacancy at Leeds United.

Former Aston Villa and Brentford boss Dean Smith is under consideration at St Mary’s, though Southampton could look to appoint from within. First-team coach Ruben Selles, who has been placed in temporary charge, is highly rated by the Saints hierarchy and could be given a chance to prove himself in the top job.

Other managers admired by Southampton are River Plate icon Marcelo Gallardo and former Bayer Leverkusen boss Gerardo Seoane, but sources have told 90min that both have little interest in taking over at this time.

Another surprise contender for the job is Jesse Marsch. The American recently lost his job at Leeds United following a disastrous run of form but is now in contention for a swift return to Premier League management at St. Mary’s.
