Egypt boss Carlos Queiroz steps down after failing to reach the 2022 Qatar World Cup, insisting the ‘dream is over’… as they suffered defeat by Senegal on penalties once AGAIN in play-off qualifier
Carlos Queiroz has announced his departure from the Egyptian national team after failing to reach the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The Pharaohs were defeated 3-1 on penalties to Senegal in the World Cup play-off qualifier in Dakar on Tuesday evening.The match ended 1-0 to Senegal after 120 minutes and 1-1 on aggregate just weeks after Senegal beat Egypt on penalties in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations.Liverpool star Sadio Mane delivered the winning spot kick as Senegal edged Egypt on penalties at the end of a tempestuous World Cup playoff second leg.
Mohamed Salah, Ahmed Sayed Zizo, and Mostafa Mohamed missed Egypt’s penalties in the shootout.
The former Real Madrid manager has now brought his short stint in charge of the national team to a close after only taking over the reins in September after not being able to guide Egypt to their fourth-ever World Cup.
Queiroz posted on Twitter: ‘Dream is over. From the bottom of my heart, my gratitude to Egypt Federation for this honour of coaching the National Team.
‘To all my players and my staff, my recognition and humble thank you so much,’ he added. ‘You will be always in my heart.
‘It was my privilege to work and be helped by such dedicated and capable professionals and wonderful friends.’
‘Without you, nothing could be possible for me in my life,’ he concluded. ‘I am very much proud of you lads.
‘My best wishes and enormous gratitude to all Egyptian fans. To the future.’
The former Portugal boss oversaw a mixed campaign at the Nations Cup, as Egypt reached the final, but were criticised for their conservative and negative style.
The 69-year-old also courted controversy with his incendiary touchline style, and was suspended for the final after being sent off in the semi-final victory over hosts Cameroon, after furiously claiming to the referee that one of his players was punched.
With the scores locked level and the clock ticking towards 90 minutes, an incident between Ramadan Sobhi and Nouhou Tolo saw tempers flare – sparking Queiroz to angrily protest on the touchline before being dismissed.
The veteran manager was initially shown a yellow card on 87 minutes, having complained to the linesman, and was banished away from the pitch after picking up another caution just a matter of minutes later.
Queiroz had two stints at Manchester United as Sir Alex Fergusons’s assistant and has also held the reins of the national teams of Colombia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates, as well as his homeland Portugal.
