The value of the MLS All-Star Game continues to spark debate as many professional sports leagues struggle to keep fans engaged with their annual showcase events.
To make the occasion more exciting, MLS has introduced new features such as the Skills Challenge and the MLS All-Stars vs. Liga MX All-Stars match, adding a competitive edge while keeping the event entertaining.
Unlike other leagues, the MLS All-Star Game is more than just an exhibition. It brings together the league’s biggest players, coaches and executives, provides major opportunities for sponsors, and serves as a unique link between American sports culture and global football. However, questions remain over its long-term importance, especially after Lionel Messi missed the last two editions.
For many players, though, being selected remains a special honour.
Columbus Crew defender Steven Moreira, a two-time MLS All-Star, said earning a place in the squad was one of his goals after joining the league in 2021. He praised the concept, saying it is admired even by his former teammates in France.
New MLS stars Thomas Muller and Son Heung-min also welcomed the experience. Son described the event as a chance to play alongside world-class footballers, enjoy the occasion and connect with teammates and rivals in a different environment.
The South Korean captain also highlighted the importance of the event for young talents such as Zavier Gozo, Julian Hall and Lucas Herrington, saying they have a valuable opportunity to learn from experienced players while proving they deserve to be on the big stage.
Beyond the action on the pitch, the MLS All-Star week also provides a platform for league officials and club executives to discuss the future of the competition and the league itself.
