France Player Ratings vs Spain: Mbappe and Olise Struggle as Costly Digne Error Ends Les Bleus’ World Cup Dream

France’s bid to reach a third consecutive FIFA World Cup final came to an end on Tuesday after a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Spain, with star attackers Kylian Mbappe, Michael Olise and Ousmane Dembele unable to make an impact as Les Bleus were outplayed in the semi-final.
Didier Deschamps’ side failed to register a shot on target until the closing stages, while Spain controlled the contest and deservedly secured their place in the final.
France made a steady start without dominating possession, but they also limited Spain’s attacking opportunities during the opening exchanges. The game changed midway through the first half when Lucas Digne brought down Lamine Yamal inside the penalty area. The referee pointed to the spot, and Mikel Oyarzabal calmly converted the penalty to hand France their first deficit of the tournament.
After falling behind, Les Bleus struggled to respond. Spain’s defence successfully contained Mbappe, Dembele, Olise and Bradley Barcola, preventing the French attack from creating meaningful chances. At the other end, France found it equally difficult to stop Yamal, Oyarzabal and Dani Olmo from dictating play.
Spain threatened several times before extending their lead just before the hour mark. Substitute Maxence Lacroix, who replaced the injured William Saliba in the first half, was caught out after stepping forward at the wrong moment. Dani Olmo slipped a pass into Pedro Porro, who had plenty of space to finish comfortably and double Spain’s advantage.
France never looked capable of mounting a comeback as Spain remained in control until the final whistle.
The defeat marked a disappointing conclusion to Didier Deschamps’ remarkable spell in charge of the national team, ending his hopes of guiding France to a third straight World Cup final. Meanwhile, Luis de la Fuente’s side advanced to the final after producing a composed and convincing performance.
