Community service bill passed to ease congestion in prisons & awaits Presidential assent – Suame MP John Darko

The Member of Parliament for Suame, John Darko Esq., has disclosed that the Community Service Bill has been passed by Parliament and is currently awaiting presidential assent before it becomes law.

Speaking on Kessben FM, Mr. Darko said the proposed legislation is intended to help reduce overcrowding in Ghana’s prisons by allowing courts to impose community service for eligible offenders instead of custodial sentences.

According to him, the bill is expected to ease congestion within correctional facilities while promoting rehabilitation through non-custodial sentencing for appropriate cases.

Mr. Darko expressed optimism that once the President assents to the bill, it will mark a significant step toward reforming Ghana’s criminal justice system and improving conditions within the country’s prisons.
